ESC Graduates Association General Assembly 25/3
by Ashraf Moftah

Dear ALL,

Saiid, nice of you to invite EGcairo chat pals to the ESC meeting and your direct invitation Ihab. But I m curious, Lamy are you aware of egcairo@yahoogroups.com chat site? Maybe your roster of Egyptian, American, English and Australian chapters can join up, rather than have two or three sites for the same school association? maybe we should try and consolidate them into one site....for that I salute the late Ahmad Barada and your efforts Lamy, Ives and others. (Lamy, I was unable to open obog-esc.org site please advise)
By the way I didn t mean to disrupt the meeting, but somehow Samia did not take my comments kindly (and therefore maybe stricken from the minutes since I am not a member). However in the interest of free speech and posterity, my comments covered the following:
1- My heartiest congratulations on the formation of the association, of which I was unaware - as well as the ambush fees. For the benefit of the unaware, LE 100 one time membership fee, plus LE25 subscription renewal annually.
2- That all Alumni should be automatic members rather than having a cut off at 1992. Freshly graduated students can contribute a lot, do not underestimate the synergies of youth and experience. They would probably be the best reference as to what is really needed at the school.
3- Leveraging the 1,000 laptop computer deal which I estimate is worth at least LE5m to the benefit of the school upkeep and required capital expenditure. Although Samia was quite receptive to Ashraf Kinawi''s contribution and remarks, she seemed to find my remarks rather unsettling..... By the way I also question the rationale of ordering 1,000 portable laptops for the school and in that quantity, rather than desktops which are less expensive and immobile. Finally to target 1 to 1 ratio of computers to students is unreasonable since computer time is shared. I believe that the school would actually be saturated with idle computers and computer time at the 1,000 computer level.
4-Other forms of funding rather than soliciting Alumni donations for school requirements such as; raising of the school fees, merchandising of logo and products, exclusivity contracts for uniforms and catering against financial contributions.
5- Using the Association as means of channeling such funds back into the school system for its financial requirements.

A final comment regarding the above financial suggestions and in an effort to understand better what is needed for the school and to solicit ideas from other alumni. The following approximations were verbally disclosed:

a) There are 5000 students at the school
b) That the fees are fixed at 1700 LE with annual 10%increase
c) That the staff is 600

I can also deduce the following:
a) That total school revenue from fees is 8.5 m LE
b) That average fee revenue per total staff is LE 14,166 per annum
c) That ratio of staff to students is 1 : 8.33 (does anybody know the number of teachers...?)

I believe that we will need full ESC financial statements and management information, in order to better serve the interest of the school.
Thanks again for the invitation and look forward to exchanging views on how to make this a better school, with the ability to generate sufficient continuous income for educational excellence, rather than one off donations.

Yours truly,

Ashraf Moftah
