I am in touch with quite a number of OB however
I would love to get in touch with OG who were
boarders/day pupils at the school from 1952-
1956.It is difficult to search fo og as their
surnames may have changed now.I would also like
to know if anyone knows the whereabouts of Maria

Hello I am Tony''s son. Sadly, my father passed
away on 29 November 2003 in Australia at age 71 -
he had a brain tumour. He married Margret my
mother who is still alive and living in
Queensland, Australia. I have spent my life
looking at the wonderful photographs of their
life in Egypt. There are many photographs of life
at Victoria College - including many class
photographs of students and staff. I would be
happy to share some of these on this site if you
I NEED YOUR HELP
by Serge Vartanian

Hello everyone,
My name is Serge Vartanian and I attended the
ESC for only a few years during my infancy. I
began school in either 1958 or 59 when I was
about and left in 1963. I was born in 1954. I
have very few recollections at such a young age
of going to school but am in the process of
searching through some photos my parents would
have taken during these early school years.
Believe it or not I still have my ESC cap!(a
very dark navy colour). In 1963, when I was 9,
we migrated to Sydney Australia. Some of the few
memories I have are things such as being picked
up from home by the school bus, attending the
athletics carnival on the school grounds amidst
large colourfull tents for the parents and
teachers to view, playing soccer for sports,
building dams and canals in the sand of the
school playground, holding hands with a female
student as we were asked to by our teacher
walking in a single file on a school excursion
once through some gardens somewhere! Sounds a
bit silly I know (hahaha) but I was only a very
young man then! Now, 45 years later it was by
chance that I came across this website and I was
extremely fascinated by how many of you during
your more senior years at school have kept in
contact by way of emails and reunions. If anyone
does remember my name I would love to hear from
you. The only trouble is, at this point I do not
have a record of anyone''s name who may have been
in my class/es. I will endeavour to dig up what
I can in the way of photos and send them and
this may hopefully refresh some memories. Yes 45
years is most certainly a very long time but I
still feel a strong connection from the
beginning of my schooling days. I can only hope
someone does remember me. It''s a tall ask but
you never know! Bye for now my fellow mates and
take care - until next time.
P.S. Does anyone live in Australia?

Miss Sanderson
by Khaled Tawakol

Memories of Miss Sanderson can never be
forgotten. I graduated from The English School
(ESC) in 1958. The twelve years I spent at the
ESC have definitely had a strong impact on
whatever success I achieved in life. People like
Miss Sanderson (Headmistress of the Junior
School)and Mr. (Sir) Brandon Late (Headmaster of
the ESC), were both wonderful educators that
will be remembered by many of the hundreds of
students that graduated from the ESC.
I will also not forget the day that Miss
Sanderson planted a tree in an area at the
school which was named Miss Sanderson''s Garden.
Strangely enough, my aging memories of that day
are so vivid, I can visualize most of the event
as if it happened yesterday.
God bless her soul.

Remembering German bombers over Suez (1941?)
by william penna

Yes, I remember that occasion very well. I was
only 14 or so at the time, and I was so scared
that my teeth were chattering uncontrollably at
one point. We had a very good view of the
harbour, and one of the ships that we saw bombed
and set on fire was the Georgic, a passenger ship
converted for wartime use and carrying British
families and, ironically, Italian prisoners-of-
war. It eventually sank in shallow water in Suez
Bay. Subsequently, the ship was raised and
underwent extensive repair, and then used to
transport troops for the remainder of the war.

I spoke to Peter today. He has a picture of you
on a Boy-scout camping trip to the Sinai

German bombers flying low and bombing ships in
the Canal filled with evacuees bound for South
Africa, and how all you boys had a front row
seat to all the action. Do you remember that?

Remembering Miss Sanderson
by Moreen le Fleming Ehly.

I remember your aunt quite well. I first
attended tthe English School in 1936 when the
school was in Boulac. I was placed in
Transition as I could read quite well. Your
aunt and Mrs.Livingstone helped all us new
pupils get settled, both being very kind and
ladies in every sense of the word. Miss Sanderson
provided all of us with an example of how to
behave in the real world. Only yesterday I
brought up her picture on the computer screen to
show my granddaughter what one of my favorite
school-teachers looked like. I know that she
shall be missed.

Edith Cooper-Chadwick
by John Cooper-Chadwick

My mother was born in 1923. She came back to
Alexandria along with her two sisters, Audrey
and Ivy, after my grandfather was appointed
Bursar. Their much younger brother Owen Anthony
Fowles attended the school, too, and I believe he
eventually was games master there. If you google
Edith Kathleen Cooper-Chadwick there is an
obituary in the February 22 San Diego Union-
Tribune which I hope is mostly accurate.

Remembering Peter
by William (Willy) Penna

Saw your message on the ESC site. I remember
Peter vaguely, but I remember your names of
course. In fact, along with numerous other boys,
I had a huge crush on you at one time (probably
when I was about 14).
I''m sorry to hear about Peter''s accident, and I
hope he pulls through OK.
As I get older (I''m 82 now), I think a lot about
my childhood in Heliopolis, and how happy I was
there.
Great to know that there is someone around who
was at the English School at the same time as I
was.

I have just discovered this wonderful site. I was
in the school from 1949 to 1951 when I left aged
12 to go to an English prep school in Hampshire -
grotesque by compaison with ESC.

I remember Tossoun Roushdy, Patrick Hopper,
Farouk Mohsen, Henry Hall, Margaret Khorashy,
Patricia Devereux, Fanny Kyriakidis. I guess I
just missed out on the photo of the class of 1951
on the site.

I had a bunch of red hair (now gone alas) and
lived in Zamalek. Was never beaten by Mr beard!

Would love to re-establish contacts - even after
50 years. And to get in touch with the organisers

Class of 1954

Hi Shahira,

I did my O-levels in 1954 and took off for
University. I don't know if you are looking for
A-level graduates in 1954, but I do remember that
we were in class together at one time.

I now live in California to which I emigrated in
1964. I'm semi-retired from the high technology
business, although I still do some consulting
work to avoid boredom.

I see that you are at AUC. Do you know Jan
Montassir? She's married to one of my closest
friends from my days in Egypt - Safwat.

It looks like we are going to have a school
reunion here in San Francisco next month.
Looking forward to it. I've attended all the
ones that were held in the US as well as a number
of the London reunions.

Cheers,

Essam Badawi

1953 boarder
by Tarek Makeen

Eckhard,

I remember you but you probably don't remember

me because (in 1953) I was still in the Junior

School and a boarder, I was rather tall for my

age (11 then) had blond hair (German mother) and

rather skinny.

I distinctly remember the afternoon homework

sessions over which you sat on the teacher's

table and presided over us.

Tarek Makeen.

Does anyone know the whereabouts of Edwin Cook,

Billy Bond-Taylor, Munir Sioufi, Hassan Sallah,

Bugger!
by Bill Cresswell

Hi Joe

What a pity ... seems I've missed the reunion!
I have to say that I haven't "logged-in" for a
while, and my details have changed.
For your information they are:
0416 100 206
02 9484 3536
2 Glenoak Way
Cherrybrook NSW 2126

I've emailed Mohammed to ask how I can update my
existing details, so I'll do that just as soon
as he responds.

In any event, please email me.

Cheers for now

Bill Cresswell
